Focus on CAE is an online course, designed for students who are thinking of taking the Cambridge Advanced exam. It consists of 12 modules and 200 units of English, and provides approximately 120 hours of study for students. • Course aims To take students from Elementary, CEFR C1 up to C2. • To give students information about, coaching in and practice in all areas of the CAE exam, to enable them to be fully prepared when it comes to them taking the test. • The course blends grammatical structures necessary for this level, with vocabulary, spelling, reading, listening, writing and speaking. Grammar By the end of the course, students will be able to: • talk and write confidently about the past, present and future, using a variety of verb forms. They will use the continuous and perfect aspect when the need requires, and also be able to talk about present and past habit. • form sentences present, past and future perfect, in simple and continuous forms. • use more complex passive forms and know when to use the active voice and passive voice. They will have increased their knowledge of passive verb forms. They will be able to use causatives to denote arranging to have something done. • use defining and non-defining relative clauses. • use all general conditional forms, first, second, third and mixed. Use wish structures in the present past and future. • identify transitive and intransitive verbs forms, and be accurate when following one verb form with another, which will be in the gerund or infinitive form • recognise the different ways the verb need can be used, in modal and non-modal contexts. • use modal verbs in both general and more subtle ways to express differences in nuance, formality and register • use question tags to form questions from statements • use articles correctly • use I'd rather or It's time + subject + past form to express present needs and wishes. Vocabulary By the end of the course students will have learnt approximately 1000 lexical items, including nouns, verbs and adjectives, phrasal verbs, idiomatic language, different English registers and lexical sets. Skills By the end of the course students will have had exposure to and practice in reading and hearing formal and informal English from a wide variety of registers, accents and contexts, descriptions, stories and opinions.
